Cyber-Existentialism: Meaning in a Virtual World

The 'grind' is a central part of gaming—the repetitive act of training to gain incremental improvements. To the uninitiated, this looks like Sisyphus pushing his boulder. But through the lens of existentialism, we realize that meaning is not found in the destination (the rank), but in the act of rebellion against our own limits. Sartre and Camus argued that we must create our own meaning in an indifferent universe. In gaming, we create meaning through the pursuit of perfection. This article explores how the 'struggle' toward brilliance gives us a sense of agency and purpose that is often missing in mundane reality. We are the architects of our own digital destiny, and the value of our achievements is defined by the effort we choose to invest.
