The course also explores compositional devices, perspective, and visual aesthetics, encouraging keen observation and interpretation. An optional exploration into analog film cameras and darkroom printing is available for the final project, offering a comprehensive understanding of the medium. Introduction to Film and Video
This course offers a dynamic avenue for creative expression through the medium of videography. Students will draw inspiration from current films and delve into the history of cinema. Following an introductory project to establish fundamental skills, learners will embark on an ambitious final project. Guidance will be provided in screenplay adaptation or original writing for the creation of short films, developing skills in writing, directing, acting, camera operation, and editing. Final projects have the potential for submission to the annual Deerfield Academy Film Festival.
Introduction to Architecture
Designed for aspiring architects, this course provides an overview of major architectural movements, significant architects, and landmark buildings throughout history. It also addresses contemporary architectural issues and introduces basic drafting and digital drawing techniques. Through discussions and field trips, students will develop an appreciation for architecture, becoming conversant with its history and vocabulary. The completion of studio drawings and renderings will prepare students for more advanced architecture courses within the curriculum. This course is specifically for students who have not previously taken Architectural Drawing & Design 1 or 2.
Arabic Language and Culture Series
The Arabic language program offers a progressive curriculum designed to cultivate fluency and cultural understanding.
Arabic 1: Introduces the Arabic alphabet, Modern Standard Arabic, and the Levantine dialect through a blended learning approach utilizing iPads and traditional methods. Emphasis is placed on communicative skills and grammar.
Arabic 2: Advances students to an intermediate level, further developing communicative skills in both dialects and expanding grammatical knowledge through authentic materials and collaborative work.
Arabic 3: Builds upon previous skills, focusing on advanced communication in Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect through real-world assignments and continued practice with digital and traditional tools.
Arabic 4: Deepens language proficiency through authentic materials, literature in Modern Standard Arabic, and integrated grammar discussions, enriching vocabulary and understanding through varied assignments.
