Led by Yung-hsun Cheng, the study focused on popular titles like Genshin Impact, an open-world role-playing game, and Roblox, a platform for user-generated games. The research comprised two phases: a survey involving 202 Taiwanese university students and a small-scale experiment with 12 participants. Both groups had prior experience with the chosen games.

The survey participants completed validated scales measuring their motivation for online gaming, imaginative capability, and creativity. The experimental group engaged in either Roblox or Genshin Impact for four weeks, with EEG measurements taken before and after the intervention. The survey results strongly supported Cheng's hypothesis, revealing that a higher motivation for online gaming was indeed associated with enhanced imagination and creativity. Crucially, the study's statistical model confirmed that imagination acts as a mediating factor, suggesting that gaming motivation leads to increased imagination, which then fuels creativity.

Experimental Evidence and Limitations

While the experimental phase showed detectable differences in brain activity pre- and post-gaming, leading to inferences about enhanced creative thinking and imagination, the study acknowledges certain limitations. The experimental sample size was small, and interpreting psychological changes solely through EEG data can be complex. Nevertheless, the convergence of survey and experimental findings provides a strong foundation for the study's conclusions.
