Investment Surges Amidst Booming Franchise Growth and Mobile Milestones

Venture capital fuels AI gaming startups, major franchises see revenue spikes, and mobile games hit significant download and revenue targets, indicating a dynamic and expanding market.

The gaming industry continues to be a hotbed of financial activity and impressive growth, as evidenced by a recent flurry of funding news and significant milestones for established and emerging titles. A new €50 million fund from FirstPoint VC specifically targets AI-driven gaming and entertainment startups, signaling a strong belief in the integration of artificial intelligence within the sector. Spearheaded by experienced general partners Burak Yılmaz and Mike Mike Fischer, the firm’s focus on emerging markets and its distinguished advisory board, featuring former executives from Xbox, Take-Two, and Riot Games, underscores the strategic importance of AI in shaping the future of interactive entertainment.

Franchise Powerhouses and Emerging Stars

Data analytics firm Aldora has highlighted the remarkable month-on-month revenue growth of several major media franchises, with Counter-Strike, Apex Legends, Pokémon, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six leading the pack. While established giants continue to dominate, Honkai: Star Rail has emerged as the top-performing 'mobile-first' franchise, demonstrating the enduring appeal and profitability of mobile-centric gaming experiences. The inclusion of franchises with major mobile counterparts like Pokémon, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six in the top growth rankings further solidifies the symbiotic relationship between traditional gaming and its mobile expansion.

Strategic Investments Fueling Expansion

Reforged Studios has secured a substantial $30 million growth investment from MEP Capital Management. This funding is earmarked to accelerate Reforged’s ambition of building a premier platform for video game intellectual property and publishing. The investment follows their recent acquisition of German publisher Headup, known for titles such as Bridge Constructor and Pumpkin Jack, and previous acquisitions of Ground Shatter, Extra Mile Studios, and Yellow Lab. This strategic consolidation points towards a trend of companies aiming to build comprehensive IP and publishing ecosystems.

Mobile Gaming's Revenue Milestones

In the mobile arena, Century Games' Tasty Travels: Merge Game has achieved a significant benchmark, earning $21 million in March and becoming the second highest-grossing title in the merge-2 market. This accomplishment marks the first shift in the top three merge-2 games since June 2024. Tasty Travels now accounts for 10% of the total merge-2 revenue, with a remarkable 71% increase in monthly revenue since December. Across its lifespan since April 2024, the game has generated $124 million and garnered 31 million downloads, boasting a revenue per download of $4.03 and $207 million in total user spending.

Meanwhile, Tiles Survive, a blend of tile-based exploration and strategic gameplay, has surpassed 20 million downloads since its July 2025 launch, as reported by FunPlus. The game challenges players to build a stronghold against a zombie horde, offering a compelling mix of accessibility and depth.

AI in Marketing and User Acquisition

The AI wave is also making significant inroads into game marketing. The AI marketing automation platform Uplane has successfully closed a $4.5 million seed round, led by Play Ventures, with participation from notable investors like Y Combinator and 20VC. Uplane’s platform automates critical aspects of ad creation, testing, and budget allocation, promising an average 30% increase in return on ad spend within three months, highlighting the growing reliance on AI for optimizing marketing efforts.

Similarly, Israeli startup Smash Games, known for its drop merge title Animal Suika, has secured $2 million in user acquisition funding from PvX Partners. This non-dilutive financing will fuel the scaling of Animal Suika, which the company describes as experiencing “explosive growth.” The studio, co-founded by former Moon Active and Papaya executives, aims to leverage AI-native innovation to develop and scale the next generation of hybridcasual games.

Established Titles Continue to Thrive

Even a decade after its initial release, Pixonic's War Robots continues its impressive trajectory. Celebrating its 12th anniversary, the tactical PvP shooter has surpassed 325 million registered users worldwide, an increase of approximately 20 million users year-on-year. This follows its crossing of the $1 billion lifetime revenue mark across mobile and PC in February 2025, underscoring its sustained popularity and commercial success.

The UK Market Shows Solid Growth

On a regional level, the UK mobile gaming market experienced a robust 7.9% year-on-year increase in sales in 2025, reaching approximately $2.7 billion. This growth contributed significantly to the overall UK games market, which saw a 7% year-on-year increase in total game software sales, hitting over $8.1 billion. Mobile gaming now accounts for roughly one-third of this substantial market share, demonstrating its vital economic role.
